Black-and-white warbler
Mniotilta varia
This is a juvenile (but one that has been through prebasic molt, so it looks pretty much identical to an adult - the wings are a little different) that we caught a pair of in a net a few days ago. Tiny, tiny little birds. Nets I've been running have not caught any warblers, but today I did get a couple of species of sparrows, some robins (giant jerks), a goldfinch, and a red-eyed vireo who managed to pick the finger that had the really sore hangnail and chow down. Jerk. Oh, yeah, and a couple of juncos, too, I guess.
On an unrelated note, I've proved I'm not crazy.... Well, at least not on this point: All of the UVA people know what "fives" is and call it regularly. It's not just me and it's not just a Cornell thing. So there.
It's been going on all summer, but I didn't even notice - it's just normal behavior to my mind. All the rest of y'all are the weirdos who *don't* call fives.

Fives...
... is so pre-September 11th. We've been calling "Flarbles" ever since you left. It's a much more refined term befitting this 21st century we live in. You should join it sometime.July 21 2005, 14:02:48 UTC 6 years ago
I miss the Nicki
